This week was full of fun experiences with the walk to the river, developing knowledge about Waikato te awa and tāniwha.
The children really enjoyed listening to the tāniwha story and a question came up as whether a tāniwha was real or not. Some said it is imaginary, and some said it is real and lives in Waikato te awa. They said that they saw the tāniwha cave which he/she lives in.
We looked at different drawing styles of tāniwha. Everyone has different ideas about what tāniwha might look like, and I really wanted to see the children's creative ideas. Look at what they have drawn...
I love how each tāniwha looks so unique and that they have captured the interesting features of a tāniwha which were long, colourful, and has a tongue poking out. Tino pai everyone!

Walking to Waikato te awa
The children have been waiting so patiently for this day, going to Waikato te awa!
We saw a duck.

One of the children said "Is this a tāniwha cave?"

We saw two bridges, one was Bridge street bridge and the other one was Claudelands bridge.
Was this man fishing?
We saw a little water fall.
We went to Parana Park to play. It was lots of fun!
This walk to the river was so much fun. When we came back from the trip, we had a discussion about what we saw. We also drew pictures of tāniwha. was a taniwha hiding in the cave when we were at the river? We will upload the pictures of taniwha tomorrow!

Week 3 Busy Room 2!
Our poem of the week was about the redwood tree, so we took our Homebooks outside and drew pictures of it on the picnic blankets. It was such a beautiful calm time that we spent with each other.
As a part of Tūrangawaewae unit, we have been talking about our pepeha and developing our knowledge about where each other comes from and which maunga and awa we belong to. Today, after a discussion about each other's maunga, we drew pictures of our maunga using soft pastels and collages. The children really enjoyed using the pastels and its texture. This is going to be a part of our visual pepeha.
Of course, lots of beautiful and creative play has been happening in Room 2. I love how the children use loose parts to create their own stories. The children love exploring in Pūtikitiki. They love to move their bodies and be active! I love the way they collaborate in their play.

Week 2 Working on our portraits
This week, we have worked on drawing our portraits. We had a mirror out so the children can look and study their faces. We talked about parts of the body and what we have on our face.
We also made the background art by glueing different coloured tissue paper on a white piece of paper. This was a little bit challenging at a time for some children as pieces of tissue paper got stuck together and the children needed to separate carefully with their fingers. The children worked through this challenge and created wonderful and unique art.
