Celebrating Matariki
This week, we have celebrated Matariki together in our classroom. Our children were especially excited about the Matariki Feast Day where we baked bread and roasted vegetables. Matariki is the time to come together with people we care about, cook kai, sing, and spend time with each other. Our children were very keen on kneading the bread dough and helping cut the potatoes, kumara, and pumpkin. I was so impressed with the children who were cutting the vegetables for learning to use a knife! Some of them were confident at cutting, and they said that they help their family in the kitchen!
Once the bread dough raised, we each had a turn at rolling the dough in the round shape. They loved doing this activity and said it was like playdough!
Once everything was cooked, we sat together in a circle and shared our kai. What a wonderful way to celebrate Matariki. Awesome work, everyone!

Happy Samoan Language Week!
This week, we celebrated Samoan Language Week!
During the week, we read a book called 'Lālalava' which the children really enjoyed reading and acting out the story using the lāvalava I brought from home. I also saw many children use the lāvalava in different ways. Some children wrapped baby dolls with the lāvalava, and others used them as blankets as well as wearing them.
We learnt how to say hello in Samoan, whcih was 'Talofa!' and welcomed Zoe's mother who came with a big pot of yummy sapasui. We all shared the sapasui together, and many children liked it and had seconds! Zoe's mum also taught us a Samoan song which we will keep practising.
Throughout the week, the children were so excited about learning about Samoan culture, and language. When we went to Positive Assembly, some of us wore lāvalava . One of the children said "We are a lāvalava family!" Such a wonderful description of us. It really shows how close we are as members of Room 2 and that we really appreciate and respect each others culture and where we are from.
To Zoe's mum, thank you so much for all the support that you have given us!
