Happy St.Patrick's Day
We celebrated St.Patrick's day on Tuesday. We have been talking about this day as Saoirse brought it to our attention. We decided to wear green for the day.
Saoirse's mum brought a book about St. Patrick's Day, so we read the book and it talked about the tricky leprechaun. After reading, we made traps for the leprechauns with different materials and boxes. Some children were really interested in making hats and drawing clovers. We also did some leprechaun hunting by me hiding pictures of leprechauns and the children were so excited about finding the leprechauns.
We had yummy green cookies that were made by Saoirse's family. Thank you so much for the cookies!
We took a class photo together in the end and said "Happy St.Patrick's Day!"

Tōku whānau
The last pepeha picture that we worked on today was drawing our whānau. This will complete our visual pepeha!
Next week, we will be working on saying our pepeha. The children have been practicing saying their name and where they are from in te reo Māori and it has been awesome to see how they are learning to speak in Māori!

Our school maps
Last week before we start exploring maps, I made a big maze on the courts and got the children to explore the maze. They could cross the yellow lines but not the blue ones. There were lots of communication among the children and other children directing the one in the maze using words like "forward, 1 step, turn left/right"...
Today I shared different types of maps with the children and showed the map of the school. We discussed where the places were in relation to our classroom.
How do we get to the pool? Where is the redwood tree? What is in front of our classrooms?
Then, children drew the map of our school

It shows the children's understanding about the positions of the significant places of our school. Awesome work everyone!

Our places in the world
This week we have been talking a lot about where we are from. There are many people who are from different countries or have Mums or Dads who are from difference places other than New Zealand.
We have explored this by looking at each country on the map and its flags. We have people from Japan, India, Brazil, Chile, China, South Korea and of course New Zealand, Aotearoa.
We drew pictures of our flags and painted our country.
Our children have developed fantastic knowledge about where we come from. They are very confident at saying their pepeha, Ko.......ahau. No......ahau. We have been learning to say these in front of our friends. It can be scary to come up in front of the map, but they do this so well, being brave and giving it a go.
Amazing work, Room 2! I am so proud of everyone's hard work!
