Welcome to Room 2! Nau mai, haere mai ki te akomanga rua!

Kia ora, Hello, Slamalikum, Talofa, Namaste, Konnichiwa!
Welcome to the Room 2 blog.

My name is Yoshie Akasaka, and I am the room 2 classroom teacher. I welcome the new children and their families/whānau as well as the returning children from last year.
I hope you all had a nice holiday!

I am originally from Japan and have been living in Hamilton for 16 years. I was an early childhood teacher for 10 years before becoming a new entrant teacher. I have a great passion for creating "Learning through play" philosophy in my classroom, finding out about our children's passions and support them. I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Early Intervention from Canterbury University, therefore, I am passionate about supporting children with special needs/learning needs and creating an inclusive classroom. I have been learning New Zealand Sign Language and really enjoy teaching and learning this beautiful language with the children.

This week was our first week back to school, so we got to know a little bit about each other and learnt about how our classroom and school worked. It has been a lot of fun of learning new children's names and lots of PLAY!!!!

The family corner is one of the popular areas that children love to play. It encourages children to share their ideas of the world around them, develop creativity, and communication as they negotiate with each other.

Children are able to leave their play if they are halfway through with putting cones around it. It means that they are able to play continuously and that their play is not disrupted. It is important that they have plenty of time to explore with materials, their play is respected and they know that they can come back to it.

Children working together, developing new friendships and revisiting old ones.
It is about the process rather than the product. A lot of efforts went into making this long necklace. She dropped many beads in the middle of the making, but she did not give up but kept at it. She was able to accomplish her goal! Well done!!!!

Marble run art.

Making new friends!
We had a fantastic week of getting to know each other and settling into our classroom! Well done everyone! I love the way our older children have supported the new children learn the rules of the classroom or even show the new ones where the toilets were! What a wonderful job everyone has done this week!

To the families and whānau, thank you for your support, and I am looking forward to getting to know your child and your families :-)
