Week 1 Term 3! Welcome back to Room 2!

Kia ora, welcome back to school. I could see that the children were eager to be back at school, and on the first day of Term 3, everyone was so settled and they have been playing so beautifully.

Here are some photos!

We keep supporting children's writing through their play. This week, an idea was emerged as some of the girls wanted to make a lollipop shop. They were busy drawing their own lollies and putting them on a cardboard, each of them wrote the names of their lollipops. Saoirse wrote the shop's name "Sweet shop". Writing is a way of sharing ideas, and understanding that there is an audience. They really enjoyed as they were reading other children's lollipop names and pretending to buy them.

Science Experiment: Making unicorn noodles

This was such a fun experiment. As it didn't really work the first time, we tried this experiment twice. The first experiment, we used beetroot and the second time, we used red cabbage.
1. soak the beetroot/red cabbage in hot water
2. Drain the vegetables and keep the hot water
3. Put rice noodle in the hot water and soak
4. Take the noodles out of the water and separate noodles into 3 parts
5. sprinkle basking power in one part and pour lemon juice in another part of the noodles
6. observe the changes

We used beetroot in the left photo and red cabbage was used in the right photo. With the red cabbage, the part lemon juice was poured turned into pink and it became blue with baking power.
We also talked about why. Both the lemon (acid) and the baking power (alkaline) were reacting to the special chemical that was in red cabbage. As we couldn't quite see the results at the first experiment, the children were really excited to see how the changed occurred in the second experiment, and it was great to see that children were understanding the process of the experiment too. We are doing one science experiment a week this term to develop skills to observe and describe what they see.
